Well Is It?
Through the recent months, more and more of my time has been laser focused on this idea of Greatness. A few things or ideas if you will started to make way, ideas like:
- What is greatness?
- What’s the relationship with this idea of success?
- What’s the most expeditious way to achieve greatness?
I can remember like it was yesterday the first time in my life I realized that I was sacrificing my greatness for “success” as it is mostly known to everyone. I was 25 years old and I was playing golf in Toronto Ontario with some business colleagues. I had worked with these partners for just over a year and a half at this point. We had always had a fantastic relationship in both the professional and personal fields. We both love personal growth and most of all golf! The Summer of 2003 was the scene just a day before the International Sars Stock in Toronto. Up until that point in my life, I had been a very successful sales person in the vast world of transportation with a major corporation in Quebec. At this point in my career, there were back door deals, secret meetings, and firings of people I was mentoring that didn’t really sit well at all with me. I however, believed that it was “part of the package” (remember that morning and afternoon life thing about the lies!). When my friends and I sat down for lunch after that round of golf, I was presented with a job offer. Now this offer was a generous offer, however, it was about a 27% cut in the money I was making and it was a complete “pick up and go” scenario. So I said that I would think about it on my 5 hour drive back to my house in Quebec. As I drove, many things travelled through my mind. You know how they say that you have approximately 60,000 thoughts a day… well I had about 50,000 of them in the first 3 hours of the drive. Then a song came on that changed my life forever and for the better. It was The Eye Of The Tiger by Survivor. The part of the song that told me to take this job was when they sing:
So many times it happens too fast
You trade your passion for glory
Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive
I had traded my passion for building people for the glory that came with high commissions. Never again, I had lost my greatness, never again! So the next day I arrived back at the office on Quebec, went in and quit. This was a Friday, on the monday I walked into the office in Ontario and started my new life , I will never lose my grip on my dreams of the past. With this move I met my soul mate and now have two of the most magnificent children on the planet (sorry parents). In the end, I hope that you realize that Greatness comes from inside in doing the things you love, that give you energy, feed you through excitement, and help you live your passion! True greatness can’t be handed to you from someone else, it can only come out through you!
